Understanding Hoarding Disorder

Level One Hoarding

Mild clutter with most living areas accessible and functional. Items may be disorganized, but there are clear walking paths and minimal safety concerns. Cleanup typically focuses on sorting, light removal, and restoring organization.

Level Two Hoarding

Moderate clutter with reduced living space and limited access in some areas. Excess items, trash, or debris may be present in multiple rooms. Cleanup involves larger volume removal, sorting assistance, and restoring safe movement throughout the home.

Level Three Hoarding

Heavy clutter that significantly impacts daily living and safety. Rooms may be partially blocked, with large amounts of junk, trash, or debris. Cleanup requires structured removal, multiple loads, and professional guidance to safely restore usable space.

Level Four Hoarding

Severe clutter with blocked rooms, limited mobility, and increased health or safety risks. Large volumes of debris, damaged surfaces, or unsanitary conditions may be present. Cleanup involves intensive removal, hazard identification, and extended labor.

Level Five Hoarding

Extreme hoarding conditions with serious health, safety, or biohazard concerns. Living spaces may be unusable due to debris, contamination, or structural issues. Cleanup requires specialized handling, biohazard protocols, and comprehensive restoration efforts.
